The CONTACT Project presents:THE SALON THE SALON is an experimental space that invites artists to participate in a collaborative art experience and create a piece of work. In an intimate environment, artists will create work either in a group or individually, in a variety of mediums. Rejecting standards of tradition, exclusion, and art-historical canon (as were reinforced by the original Salon de Paris) the Salon will provide participants access to an all-inclusive, open forum meant to fuel the creative process. Away from the white walls of the gallery, yet true to the definition of the word “salon” itself, each session will be held in the reception room of an apartment. Individuals will be invited to participate in each session that, beginning in the late afternoon, will last as long as there is still energy to continue to create, collaborate, and dialogue. Each session will have a pre-established theme from which the participants can draw inspiration in creating their own work. Each month the session will host a diverse group of participants; these participants will be provided with a fresh theme or objective for the day. Starting art supplies will be provided, but each individual will be asked to bring materials of their own to work with and, if they would like, to contribute to the session as well. The work and the session will be documented and displayed online. Participants will be asked to pay on a sliding scale of $5-10 dollars, as they are able to give; however, no person with a desire to play a part in Salon sessions will be excluded for the sole reason of not being able to pay. Small bites will be served or sold, in tandem with refreshments. THE SALON will commence Valentine’s Day weekend, on February 13th, 2009, with a performance by musical group Last Good Tooth, a figure-drawing session and reflexive performance by celebrated queen and performance artist Rance Palmer examing what it means "to get ready." Styled bites will be provided by the food project Sweet Tooth of the Tiger. |
